Local Outreach Worker

Part time, 2 days / 14 hours per week

(£25,000 per annum based on 35 hours, 3% employers pension contribution)

Length of contract: 1 year fixed term with potential extension

Reporting to: Director

Location: In venues in EH16 and EH15 postcodes (Newcraighall, Bingham, Magdalene and The Christians) with some working at the Craigmillar Now Arts and Heritage Centre.

About Craigmillar Now

Craigmillar Now is a community-led organisation committed to supporting people living in the greater Craigmillar area to access the arts and local history. We do this through a wide-ranging programme of creative activities, which include free-to-access arts workshops, exhibitions, film screenings and events. We host a free, weekly hot meal, prepared by local chefs and are the caretakers of a thriving community garden.

Craigmillar Now also holds the local archives, which are cared for by a team of volunteers. We regularly take our collections to venues across greater Craigmillar and further afield, reaching new communities and championing local history.

The Role

As Craigmillar Now’s Local Outreach Worker you will support local people to engage with our programme.

Your role will involve finding solutions to overcome the barriers that may stop someone from taking part in Craigmillar Now’s activities. This will include: 

-              Accompanying people to activities at the Craigmillar Now Arts & Heritage Centre.

-              Delivering or supporting the delivery of off-site ‘taster sessions’ related to our work.

-              Participating in relevant events and activities organised by local partners.

-              Arranging transport.

-              Arranging translators.

-              Identifying and signposting members of the Craigmillar Now community to other opportunities and support available locally.

 

You will be primarily based off-site, spreading the word about Craigmillar Now’s work and helping us to gain greater visibility locally.

As the Local Outreach Worker will be the point of contact for our network of community workers and referrers.

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

Confident visiting community spaces and approaching people to build new partnerships and relationships.

Solution-focused, able to work independently and use initiative

Empathetic, approachable and committed to promoting inclusion in the arts and heritage.

Understands the barriers people may face when accessing Craigmillar Now’s work.

Able to follow procedures and seek appropriate support for people living with trauma and/or in poverty.

Willing to take part in training and development opportunities.

Willing to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.

Desirable:

Previous experience working in a community-based role or third sector organisation.

An awareness of Trauma-Informed practice.

Knowledge of local organisations and connection to the Greater Craigmillar area.

Work experience in the arts and heritage sector.

Experience delivering group activities.

Qualification in Community Development, Social Work or Community Education.

A driving licence.

Could you be one of our Trustees?

Craigmillar Now are looking for new Trustees to join the Board.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people living in the Greater Craigmillar area, people with HR experience and people with financial and accounting skills.

Commitment: 4 Board meetings a year, including the AGM, held at Craigmillar Now’s Arts Centre, plus ad hoc supporting work.

Remuneration: The role is unpaid, but reasonable expenses, including travel expenses, will be reimbursed if agreed in advance.

Term: Three years, with the potential to extend by a further three years.

The board works closely with, and fully supports, the executive team (the director and staff of CN) who manage the charity’s day-to-day operations.

Key Tasks

  • Prepare for board meetings by reading papers provided in advance and participate in discussions and decision making

    Provide strategic leadership to ensure charitable objectives are met, priorities are established and the staff are supported and enabled in their work for the charity.

  • Participate in the scrutiny of, and support of, the development of the annual plan and budget

  • Take responsibility as a trustee to ensure that the board complies with charity, employment, and health and safety law and is in full compliance with the charity’s constitution.

  • Ensure the financial viability of the charity, its stability, good performance and reputation.

  • Ensure the charity has robust and reliable risk management and financial control processes in operation and is able to produce reliable risk audited annual accounts in a timely manner.

  • Approve policies, strategies and priorities for the charity and be able to explain and support these decisions and policies to the public and interested parties.

  • Provide advice or support to the executive team when asked between meetings.
