Sandra George x Glasgow International

Fri 7 – Sun 23 June 2024
5 Florence Street, Glasgow

Glasgow International | Festival of Contemporary Art

Craigmillar Now has partnered with Glasgow School of Art to present a solo exhibition of Sandra George (1957- 2013), as part of the Open Programme for Glasgow International 2024.

This retrospective exhibition of over four decades of Sandra’s work presents her photography and a selection from her wider artistic multi-disciplinary practice which included printing, painting, bookworks, textiles and jewellery. Her black and white photography reflects some of the positive and challenging environments she had to work in. It includes subjects ranging from Braille and cooking classes at The Royal Blind School, Edinburgh to practice sessions of disabled musicians. Sandra photographed community groups including Shakti Women’s Aid and a women’s refuge at Victoria Hostel. Whilst her camera reflected a multicultural Edinburgh, she also photographed racist graffiti.

We have organised the images into the same order that they are presented in the exhibition. Classroom 1 and Classroom 2 refers to the two exhibition spaces where the work is showing at Florence Street.
