The Robin Chapel

The Thistle Foundation was founded by Sir Francis and Isabelle Tudsbery in 1944 as a purpose-built housing complex designed for seriously injured servicemen and women returning from WWII.

The Robin Chapel, built shortly after in 1950, commemorates the Tudsbery’s son Robin, who was killed just days before the end of the war in 1945.

The family commissioned the finest architects and artists to construct the chapel. It was designed by John F Matthew and features the work of renowned stained-glass artist Sadie McLellan, with windows illustrating John Bunyan’s tale, The Pilgrim’s Progress.

The intricate woodwork reflects Robin’s love of the outdoors and nature, with woodland creatures such as red squirrels and robins decorating the pews and lectern.
